@ Riverside Art Museum

May 22 – September , 2010

“Seeing and Saying” exhibits selections from the Riverside Art Museum’s permanent collection. These selections were created by artists who reside or work in Southern California. The selections range greatly in size, subject matter and style. The exhibit also includes works in many different media, from oil and acrylic paint to glitter. Many of the works in the exhibit are extremely personal and intuitive.

“Seeing and Saying” provides a unique gallery experience. Rather than simply look at artworks, viewers of this exhibit are encouraged to actively participate in the art, by reading and listening to what the artists themselves have to say, and by then sharing their own input and ideas. Many of the artists in the exhibit have been interviewed, commenting on their work. It is these comments, and those made by visitors to the gallery, that drive “Seeing and Saying”.

The goal of “Seeing and Saying” is to create an intimate relationship between the viewer and the work, in transforming the way the public looks at and responds to art. When the artist’s own words are readily available, the work itself automatically becomes more personal. This access to the artist’s thoughts enables the viewer to better understand the forces behind a work of art. This breaks down the barrier between artist and viewer, allowing for a personal artistic relationship between the two.
