@ Riverside Art Museum

January 24 – March 30, 2013

Riverside-based artist Desiree Habicht was the recipient of the Honorable Mention Award from the Riverside Art Museum’s 2012 Members’ Exhibition. In an effort to further spotlight RAM’s vibrant artist-member constituency, all award winners from the past year’s exhibition will be featured in small solo exhibitions throughout the museum or at its partnering satellite venue at the Walter’s Mercedes-Benz showroom.

Locally-based artist Desiree Habicht’s art nurtures her appreciation for her surroundings and nature by developing intimate relationships with her subject matter that allows her to transform the mundane into colorful works that emanate light. Habicht works in fiber, pastel, watercolor, and commercial design and began her art career designing custom murals and artwork for interior design companies.

Habicht’s career as a full-time artist was suddenly threatened when her daughter was hit by a drunk driver, challenging her to juggle her art career with the full-time care required for her daughter. Adapting to the constant challenges of life, Habicht began creating quilt patterns in addition to her fine art. Habicht believes firmly in rising above the circumstances of life to avoid the pitfall of becoming a ‘victim.’

In 2006, Habicht took a pastel workshop and immediately fell in love with the rich colors and layered approach to working in the medium. She loves the challenge and depth that can be achieved when working with pastel, whether working in plein air or creating still-life studies.
