Land/Sky: Paintings by Karen Kitchel and Eric Nash

Exhibition: October 29, 2016 – January 29, 2017

Opening Reception: October 28, 2016, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Southern California artists Karen Kitchel and Eric Nash take decidedly different views of the American landscape. Kitchel’s elegant paintings of grasses and weeds feel deeply personal in their painstakingly detailed exploration of color and light, while Nash’s realistic paintings often depict the most iconic symbol of California’s urban environment, the freeway sign, seen against expansive blue sky.

Urban Grassland: Sketch and Study | Saturday, November 5, 12 noon – 3 p.m., Free with paid admission or membership

In conjunction with Land/Sky, join artist and founder of ArtPlantae, Tania Marien, for an afternoon of sketching and learning about urban grasses. Grass plants are everywhere—in our yards, our kitchens, our parks, and along the streets; Land/Sky artist Karen Kitchel introduces us to the third largest plant family. Enjoy the exhibition and then discover the flowing shapes and intricate details of grasses by participating in an exploratory session of botanical illustration. Participants will take home preliminary sketches and information about how to create grass studies at home.
