@ Riverside Art Museum

Exhibition: May 14 – September 13, 2017

Reception: Friday, June 9, 2017, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Free for RAM Members only

Naida Osline is a Los Angeles-based artist who combines and manipulates images sourced from both analog and digital processes, in which she blends conceptual and documentary photographic practices with an abiding interest in the transformative, mythical, and ethereal nature of existence. The exhibition features selections from three bodies of work developed over the past ten years, Florescence, Visionary Plants, and Birds.

Florescence is a portfolio of fantastical, hybrid flower specimens that merge components from plants, animals, insects, and synthetic products. The artist uses a scanner, instead of a camera, to capture detail, connecting the work with documentary photographic methods for recording botanical specimens.

Visionary Plants features key plants—tobacco, coca, coffee, cannabis, opium, and others—that have contributed to global economies, challenged beliefs, caused violence, fueled addiction, promoted spirituality, raised consciousness, inspired art, and generated legislation.

In the third series, Birds, Osline works with native birds in suburban southern California, photographing them in places of engagement, such as birdbaths, food sources, and perches. The resulting layered images of birds in flight with varying opacities suggest the existence of alternate realities that overlap within the same space.

Osline has had numerous solo exhibitions and has been included in many group shows throughout Southern California, as well as internationally. Her work has been reviewed in the Los Angeles TimesArtillery MagazineHuffington Post, the Orange County RegisterArtweek, and Artscene.
