PARA/normal Borders, a MexiCali Biennial project, brings together 55 artists from California and Mexico whose work explores the borderlands as a thin place where histories, memories, migrations, and identities refuse to remain in the past. Following an earlier version of the exhibition presented across several venues in the borderlands of Mexicali and Calexico, PARA/normal Borders arrives at The Cheech with works spanning film, sculpture, painting, photography, sound, and other media. Moving between the material and the spectral, the artists consider the border as more than a geographic line: a shifting space where histories linger, ancestors and displaced identities return, and the visible and invisible continually cross paths. The exhibition also examines how surveillance and technology extend the border beyond the landscape, producing supernatural forms of control.
