Long before their names faded from memory, Asian American artists were winning prizes, headlining exhibitions, and helping to shape modern American art. Join Tracy Fisher, Director of the Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties and Drs. Shannon Vittoria and ShiPu Wang, curators of LACMA’s California Collectives: Asian American Moderns, 1924-1965 (on view at the Riverside Art Museum through November 1, 2026), as they bring to light this forgotten story from a period of U.S. history when discriminatory laws and “Yellow Peril” stereotypes cast immigrant and U.S.-born Asians as perpetual outsiders. Artists of Asian descent refused to be defined by xenophobia, as they exhibited alongside America’s canonical artists while organizing their own art collectives—welcoming friends of all backgrounds—and staging ambitious shows from San Francisco to Little Tokyo.
