Riverside’s Eastside community has a rich history of diverse residents coming together to make their neighborhoods spaces where families can gather, connect, and feel safe. Here at the Riverside Art Museum, we are proud to support an artist-in-residence program with Juan Navarro who works with residents and non-profit organizations to beautify and transform spaces throughout the Eastside, including the three murals which have already been completed.

We hope you will join us in our next project as we gather six artists to engage with the community to create murals at Arci’s Candy Riverside, at the corner of University and Park Avenue, reflective of the aspirations of local residents. When the project is completed, we invite you to join us for the Eastside ArtFest 2020—a family-friendly event to celebrate this new community mural project located at the gateway to the Eastside. We believe this pioneer project will strengthen ties between neighborhoods and uplift artists through collaboration.

We have garnered support from the California Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, and Macy’s to help fund the majority of this project. And now, we need your help.

We need $7,900 by March 30, 2020, to bring this project to fruition. If you believe in the transformative power of the arts and strengthening our local community, please consider sponsoring the murals and Eastside ArtFest 2020 today at one of the levels below.

Thank you for your consideration,

Drew Oberjuerge, RAM Executive Director

Caryn Marcella, RAM Director of Art Education and Community Engagement

Call for Artists!

Proposals due no later than February 21, 11:59 p.m.
Incomplete forms will not be accepted.

The Riverside Art Museum is reaching out to artists to participate in a community-driven mural for the Eastside community on the side of the Arci’s Party Supply building (formerly S&W Plastics). This mural will be curated by our Artist-in-Residence Juan Navarro and will be inspired by a mural committee composed of local nonprofits and community leaders across Eastside, Riverside. This mural project should reflect a visual articulation of the community’s aspirations for their neighborhood and be a collaborative piece, including all participating artists.

Eastside aspirational themes:
Unity, peace, harmony, multicultural appreciation, and family celebrations across cultures.

We plan to choose 5 artists that:
  • can complete a mural within a four–seven-day time span;
  • are flexible and capable of collaborating with other artists;
  • are able to take community input and articulate it in their work; and
  • can make and keep deadlines and appointments.
Artist's Scope of Work, if selected:
  • attend four artists-only brainstorm sessions with lead artist;
    • First meeting is March 10, 2020, 3 p.m.–4:15 p.m.; future meetings will be decided as a group;
  • first mural draft due March 24, 2020, 3 p.m.; final draft due April 7, 2020
  • must be willing to adapt their artwork to flow with the rest of the artistic team;
  • paint the mural between April 13–24, 2020, on designated days; and
  • attend mural unveiling on May 15, 6 p.m.–8 p.m.
Artist will receive an honorarium: $2000
